Pont du Gard was built shortly before the Christian era to allow the aqueduct
of Nîmes (which is almost 50 km long) to cross the Gard river. The Roman
architects and hydraulic engineers who designed this bridge, which stands
almost 50 m high and is on three levels - the longest measuring 275 m - created
a technical as well as an artistic masterpiece.

Avignon
Avignon became home of the popes in 1309, who were fleeing the violent
chaos of Rome. Palais des Papes (Papal palace) is one of the largest
and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. One time fortress
and palace, the papal residence was the seat of Western Christianity during
the 14th century six papal conclaves were held in the Palais, leading to
the elections of Benedict XII in 1334 till Antipope Benedict XIII in 1394.
The Pont Saint-Bénézet, also known as the Pont d'Avignon, inspiration for
the song "Sur le pont d'Avignon".
